Brandon was platted as a village in 1878. It is located in Minnehaha County and founded in 1862. The county derived its name from a Sioux Indian term for waterfalls. Brandon was incorporated as a city in 1973. It was named after Brandon, Vermont.
Brandon, South Dakota, in Minnehaha county, is 6 miles E of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and 164 miles N of Omaha, Nebraska. The city benefits from easy access to the nearby cities and towns that it shares the Sioux Falls metropolitan area with.
Brandon is located at 43°35′30″N 96°34′50″W (43.591580, -96.580685), along the Big Sioux River and Split Rock Creek.
Date from the United States Census Bureau revealed that Brandon’s total area is 5.41 square miles (14.01 km2). The area covered by land is 5.37 square miles (13.91 km2) while that of water is 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2).
Data from 2010 census revealed that the people, households and families residing in the city are 8,785, 3,118 and 2,417 respectively. The population density was 1,635.9 inhabitants per square mile (631.6/km2).

⛲Parks and Recreation
Aspen Park is a 55.5 acre sports complex type park located in the south central part of town that contains eight softballs and one baseball diamond and a concession area.
There are two tennis courts, horseshoe pits and a sand volleyball court. Besides, a large array of playground equipment is available. A bike path wanders through the area and connects to Big Sioux Recreation Area. Picnic shelters are within the area for picnicking and relaxation.
Pioneer Park is a neighborhood park located in the northeast part of Brandon. The park features playground equipment, a basketball court, walking path, and a sledding hill. Also, the outdoor facility contains a newly constructed modern rest room. Conveniently, four soccer fields with a parking area are located on the lower level close to the River.
Pioneer Park has a new Disc Golf Course. The nine hole course take you up and down both levels of the park.
Tallgrass Park is a new addition to the City. This neighborhood park is located in the heart of Brandon and is the home to a recently completed playground area.
McHardy Park is a 74 acre park that lies on the Southern boundary of the City. It boasts large picnic areas with shelters built along the beautiful banks of the Splitrock Creek. It is also the home of an Annual Arts and Crafts Festival, one of the largest in the State. The Park is equipped with playground equipment, a volleyball court, softball diamond, horse shoe pit, and a sledding hill for winter entertainment.
A foot bridge crosses the Creek, a 50-foot Observation Tower overlooks the park and a Handicapped Fishing Pier hosts a nice area for fishing.Moreover, the Park contains a newly constructed modern rest room. Future improvements include camping sites, soccer fields and softball diamonds. McHardy Park contains several picnic shelters.
Big Sioux Recreation Area
Big Sioux Recreation Area is established on the banks of Big Sioux River, South Dakota.

This venue is notable among canoers, campers, disc golfers, bicyclists, hikers and archers. Groups of snowmobilers gather at the enclosed warming house whenever the snow flies.

The Brandon Golf Course is a very popular golf course in Brandon.
