Dell Rapids’ history dates back to 1859. In fact, Dells obtained its’ name from the dells and rapids of the Big Sioux River.
The township was first surveyed in 1859, subdivided in 1864 with the first settlement being built in 1868. Moving along, a boom period followed in 1871. The Dell Rapids Historic District consists of 39 buildings in the town’s business center. In essence, the district reflects late 19th century architecture which presents a picture of what life was like in South Dakota at that time. The majority of the buildings were built before 1903. Generally, the main architectural influences are Victorian, Romanesque, Revival and Neo Classical Revival. The striking factor of this district is the use of rose colored quartzite as a facing material.

The City of Dell Rapids Campground is located on the south side of the Big Sioux River on the west side of South Garfield Avenue. It provides a rustic relaxing camping experience in a beautifully serene park along the Big Sioux River.
This Campground incorporates fifteen campsites with complete facilities, a playground and access to a newly installed recreational trail with a pedestrian bridge that crosses the Big Sioux River. It is also near to other attractive city parks as well as the historic downtown Dell Rapids.

There are two separate school systems in Dell Rapids: The Dell Rapids public school system and St. Mary, a private Catholic school.
The public school system includes Dell Rapids High School, a middle school, and elementary as well as “Strive High”, an alternative secondary-education institution. The public school district’s mascot is the “Quarriers.” It is named after the large rose quartz rock quarry that is also in Dell Rapids.
