Harrisburg owes much of its existence to the railroad. On 1st August, 1879, Pembina division of the Dakota Southern Railroad passed through the Harrisburg territory and this resulted in the establishment of a post office at the depot. Throughout the early years of Harrisburg’s territory, the post office went through a few names: Saline, Springdale, and eventually in 1890, the post office was named Harrisburg, which resulted in the birth of the city.
Harrisburg was known for having an independent school district even as far back as 1904. Then, two substantial school buildings were erected – something to which no other South Dakota town this size or larger came close. Harrisburg had been known for her sound educational system since the earliest time. This has remained till today. The first school built in Harrisburg’s first school was a small white schoolhouse built in 1894. Miss Maude Brown was the first teacher.
According to history, farming and exporting grains have been the main occupation of the people of Harrisburg, making the town depended on the railway system with main connections in Sioux City and Sioux Falls. In the early years, Harrisburg’s main exports comprise seeds cattle, potatoes, corn, hogs, horses, hay, eggs, and poultry. Others are wheat, butter, oats, barley and cheese. In 1905, Harrisburg gained popularity as the major producer of grains and livestock. It advanced its competition, with 240 acres per year

Data from the United States Census Bureau showed that the city has a total area of 2.48 square miles (6.42 km2), all of it land.
